Madison has been my friend since the second grade. We lived down the street from each other for 15 years. We used to do everything together, playing with barbies for hours and hours during the summer, building a tree house (it was legit!) in her backyard, doing puzzles until the wee hours of the morning during sleepovers, scaring our sisters just for fun...we did it all! Then time got the better of us and we started growing apart. We graduated from high school and got involved in our own things. We stayed in touch here and there and then one day I got word that her kidneys failed. Dialysis became a way of life for her until eventually she needed a transplant; her dad donated one of his kidneys to her. As years passed she kept on living her life until that kidney also began to fail. I don't recall how long it's been since that happened but this year, finally, she got a new one. That's right, she now has four kidneys in her body and only one works. Better one than none!
We did a photo shoot to celebrate. My favorite accessory in this series? The flower. Why? Madison's new boyfriend is a sweetie. When he found out we were doing a photo shoot--that is, about five minutes before we started--he wandered across the street to a neighbor's house and found a yellow flower. Why yellow? Because it matched the shoes she was wearing. How cute is that??
Madison. Survivor. A giggling, fun-loving survivor. I'm glad she gets to be here that much longer.
